Pictured here is a World War I soldier. At the outbreak of war, young African American men quickly rushed to enlist; a desire to serve and protect the home front was a natural extension to the value of community building. However, the War Department issued an order to halt the recruitment of “colored volunteers.”

Charles Young, pictured here on July 22, 1919, was colonel of a Buffalo Soldier unit, building community pride while serving as acting superintendent of the Sequoia National Park. He named a giant redwood tree the Booker T. Washington Tree. Later the National Forest Service named a tree in honor of Colonel Young, and a street in Allensworth, California, bears his name.
